The University and Hanseatic league town of Greifswald is located in the state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on the river Ryck, which runs into the bay of Greifswald, a shallow part of the Baltic sea.

The University of Greifswald, founded in 1456, is one of the oldest in Germany and was the oldest university in Sweden and Prussia.
