Sh. Liu (P): Hybrid Kinetic–MHD Simulations of Energy-Dependent Effects of Runaway Electron Beams on MHD Instabilities 30m

Runaway electrons (REs) are of particular importance to the safe operation of tokamaks. Electrons may be accelerated by the large toroidal electric field arising during a major disruption and cause substantial damage when reaching material walls. Via collisions, an avalanche can set in such that eventually a large fraction of the pre-disruption plasma current can be converted into relativistic runaway electron current. In this work, first, the 2D and 3D verification works are carried and compared with analytical results and other numerical methods. Also, the influence of the RE kinetic energies and the corresponding drift orbit shifts onto the linear and non-linear dynamics of TMs is investigated. One of the important effect is that the mode coupling due to RE curvature drift will possibly cause a more stochastic region and thus influence RE radial transport.
